Shelter Parent Pays Scratchers Win Forward

When Lottery staff teamed up with several St. Louis area shelters in December to incent adoptions using animal-themed Scratchers Lottery tickets, little did they know that a recipient would pay potential winnings forward to the shelters. But one pet parent who won $106 on her “Santa Paws” tickets did just that.

“I only go to the APA (Animal Protective Association),” said Lori Hans of Affton. “I just think they are the greatest people on the face of the planet for taking care of the animals.”

On Dec. 20, when Hans went to the APA, 1705 S. Hanley Road in St. Louis, she was planning to adopt a cat. She told the attendant what type of cat she was looking for and asked her to pick out a couple of cats who fit those characteristics. The attendant brought back two cats. She said the first cat was too shy, but the second one stole her heart.

“His name was Casanova, but I like the name Harry, so now he is Harry Casanova,” she said. “I instantly fell in love with him – I knew that was it.”
Hans found out that that the cat had been at the APA for two months after being rescued from a hoarding situation.

“I told him, ‘You’ve got a home for Christmas!’”

After finalizing the adoption and receiving $20 worth of $1 “Santa Paws” tickets, Hans wanted to give the tickets back to the shelter. She said they told her they couldn’t accept them.

“So I sat down and scratched them, and the one was $100,”she recalled. “We were all tickled pink – just thrilled!”

Hans said she drove down to a nearby QuikTrip to cash the tickets, which ended up being worth $106 in all, and she brought the money back and presented it to the employees at the shelter.

“When I retire, I want to volunteer there,” said Hans, who currently works as a receptionist for Air Masters in St. Louis.
