For Gary Stratton of Rolla, chocolate smells like money – $5,000, to be exact. Stratton, 67, a self-described occasional Missouri Lottery player, said he was considering buying his “monthly” Scratchers ticket at Phillips MPC, 1906 Bishop Ave. in Rolla, when they clerk told him some important news.

“He said, ‘Hey, this one smells like chocolate,’” recalled Stratton. “I said, ‘Yeah, right.’ So, I went ahead and bought one. Bingo.”

He purchased the new $5 game, “Chocolate Cash,” a scented ticket. Stratton said he scratched it in his car.

“There were eight $500s (prizes) on there, eight $100s and four $50s. I won’t forget,” he declared.

He immediately started planning how to tell his wife, Kathleen.

“I said, ‘Honey, I’ve got one here that won all 20. Can you add those up for me?’” he told her. “She lit up, boy!”

Stratton still works two jobs, one at Robertson and Penn Inc. and a part-time job with Brewer Science. He said he was having too much fun to quit now. The money will go toward a new back door at their home.

“If there’s any left over, we’ll buy chocolate,” he joked. “With five grandkids, I’ll bet we can find something to do with it. It’d be nice to save some of it, but I’m a realist.

“If you feel it, go for it,” Stratton counseled others. “Or, if it smells like chocolate…”

Chocolate Cash” is a $5 game that officially began Dec. 29, 2014. The first scented ticket in Missouri, the game features a chocolate smell and instant prizes up to $100,000.
