A trip for building supplies included a few extra stops and Missouri Lottery tickets, resulting in more than a new bathroom. Linda and Russell White of Mexico intended on going to the hardware store for items for a bathroom rehab, but Linda picked out a Scratchers ticket on the way that delivered a $100,000 financial makeover. She explained how the winning ticket jumped out at her.

“The Christmas ticket,” she said. “I kind of live by my gut. That’s the one I want.”

She recalled that she had made her selection at the Instant Ticket Vending Machine (ITVM) at Gasper’s Truck Stop, 3325 County Road 211 in Kingdom City, and had to ask Russell for more money to buy the winning “Holiday Lights” Scratchers ticket.

“I had pushed all my buttons, and there was another one that I wanted. I said, ‘Can I have three more dollars?’” she asked Russell.

He obliged that time, but was less cooperative as she tried to get him to pull over after uncovering the $100,000 prize. Linda said they had been to Menard’s in Columbia and were traveling home when she began to add up the winnings on the “Holiday Lights” Scratchers ticket.

“Holy cow, it’s $20,000!” she exclaimed. “He would not pull over. I didn’t have my glasses on, so he figured I wasn’t seeing right. I scratched the next one, and the next, and I was like, ‘We just won $100,000!’ He pulled over.”

The Wrights operate Linda’s Daycare and Learning Center out of their home. They have no plans to change what they do.
“This is the only job I’ve ever loved,” explained Linda. “The children are like our grandchildren.”

And it’s going to be a good Christmas, she added.

“We’re going to give to our kids, and we plan on sharing,” said Linda.

First and foremost, they will pay off her mother’s home.

“It’s been hard for her, and she weighs on my mind a lot. This is just kind of like a present for helping us out all those years,” she concluded.

Linda, 52, is the Scratchers player, leaving Russell, 51, to handle the Draw Games. They’ll keep trying for a bigger prize and suggested other players stick with it.

“Keep scratching,” said Linda. “It will work; it will pay off. Keep scratching.”

Holiday Lights” is a $5 game that officially began Oct. 19. The game features four top prizes of $100,000. The Wrights were the first players to claim a top prize. All of the holiday-themed Scratchers feature “To/From” lines at the top of the ticket, making them easy gifts or gift tags. The holiday-themed Scratchers are also eligible for entry in the “Hollywood Holiday” second-chance promotion, where players have the chance at one of four trips to Hollywood for events like the Grammys or the Oscars.
