Powerball paid off big Wednesday night for one winning ticket sold in Louisiana. The winner of the $48.1 million Powerball jackpot now has to decide if they want the 25-year annuity or the $26 million cash option. The ticket holder will have 60 days after the ticket is validated to make that decision. In addition to the jackpot winner 273,101 other players won a total of almost $2.1 million in secondary prizes. The numbers drawn were: 15, 35, 40, 43, 46 and the Powerball was 33. The Power Play multiplier was 3. Four players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. None of those players purchased the Power Play option for $1. If they had they would have multiplied their prize by 3 for a total prize of $300,000. Thirty-two players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Two of those players had the Power Play option and multiplied the prize by three for a total prize of $15,000. Almost 19,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 3 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night’s multiplier. Players purchased almost 11 million tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night. Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels. The jackpot for the Saturday, March 30 drawing will be $10 million with a $5.6 million cash option. The lotteries sold $1.3 billion in Powerball tickets in 2001. That translates into more than $400 million for worthwhile state projects. Powerball is played in 21 states and the District of Columbia. Pennsylvania will begin selling Powerball tickets in the summer of 2002. For more information on Powerball, including video of the drawing, please visit our website at www.powerball.com
