A Columbia man has remained persistent in playing the Missouri Lottery and is now celebrating a large win. Joseph Burks, 70, said he buys his tickets every week in hopes of winning a jackpot. His dream came true after matching all five winning numbers in the Oct. 18 Show Me Cash drawing. The payoff for Burks totaled $117,000.

“I’m going to start playing more now!” declared Burks, while claiming the prize at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City. “I usually get, besides Show Me Cash, one Powerball and one Missouri Lotto every Wednesday and Saturday. I play the same numbers on Show Me Cash.”

Burks used his own numbers to win the jackpot, which includes the birthday of his son, Joe, who accompanied him to Jefferson City. The winning combination for the Show Me Cash drawing on Oct. 18 was:  6, 7, 10, 14 and 30.

“He’s the one that got me playing Show Me Cash,” said Burks of his son. “Darn good game! Won’t win the millions, but you get more chances to win.”

He added that he thought consistent play was the key, as he recalled stories about other winners.

“I’ve been playing for years and years,” he said. “Back when Missouri Lotto started, I watched some winner interviews. They played constantly, they said.”

He likened this win to his determination to make it to retirement with the U.S. Postal Service.

“I had a dollar for every time I wanted to quit through the years, 31 years, then I wouldn’t have to win the Powerball. But I hung in there, and now they send me a retirement check,” said Burks.

He espoused more wisdom with regard to his winnings, vowing to keep the purchases simple.

“I’m old enough to know that the money goes faster than you think it does,” he said.

Plans for the windfall include new teeth, a hearing aid and a vehicle upgrade.

“He loves his 1992 Ford truck, but I told him he needs to upgrade,” suggested Joe.

Burks said he’ll keep playing the Lottery and offered advice for other players.

“Keep playing,” he said. “That’s the main thing. Keep in there; keep playing.”

Show Me Cash is a daily Draw Game with jackpots that start at $50,000 and grow until someone wins. Burks is the 331st jackpot winner in the game since it began in 2008. In the past 12 months, there have been 51 Show Me Cash jackpots awarded with an average amount of more than $240,000.

Burks purchased the winning ticket at Patricia’s Foods, 900 Keene St., in Columbia. The business received a $500 bonus for selling a winning Show Me Cash jackpot ticket.
