A Fenton man on the way to work decided to take a chance on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket and got a $50,000 payday. John Ackfeld, 51, bought a “5X Crossword” Scratchers ticket at Petro Mart, 1200 Main St. in Imperial, on Aug. 30.

“We work on Sundays,” he explained. “I’m on a paving crew. I just stopped at a gas station in Imperial on the way and bought a ticket.”

Ackfeld said he’s more of a Draw Games player, but he usually tries a Scratchers ticket once a week. He was sitting in a truck on the job site when he uncovered the prize.

“I said, ‘Holy cow!’ Got another one, another one, another one,” recalled Ackfeld. “Didn’t believe it.”

He said he had a friend check it, and then they tried to get confirmation at another gas station. On larger winning tickets, the Lottery machine usually says, “Claim at Lottery Office.”

“I wasn’t totally sure until I got here, and they put it in the computer,” he said while claiming the ticket on Sept. 3.

Plans for the windfall include paying bills and possibly buying a new car.

Ackfeld said while this win “was enough,” he’ll keep playing.

“Keep trying,” he suggested. “Never give up!”

5X Crossword” is a $3 game that officially began May 19. More than $4 million in prizes, including four top prizes, remain in the game. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at MOLottery.com.
