A Paris woman used a trip through a new area as an excuse to play the Missouri Lottery and was rewarded with a $5,000 prize. Rebecca Ekstrom, 47, said she was rolling through Montgomery City and decided to take a chance at Casey’s General Store, located at 600 S. Sturgeon.
“I was going down a road through a town that I don’t usually go through,” began Ekstrom. “I hadn’t ever hit anything more than $40 at a Casey’s store, so I stopped in. I stopped to get a drink and thought, ‘Well, I’ll buy a ticket.’”
She explained that she bought one “Lucky 7s Playbook” and won $20, so she played a few more before finding the $5,000 prize. She scratched the winning ticket at the counter in front of the store clerk.
“The more I’m scratching, she’s getting more excited than I am,” recalled Ekstrom. “I kept scratching pages and hitting. I got to the end, and she goes, ‘How much was that?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know. I lost count.’
“Held my breath and shook a little bit,” she continued. “It had to soak in more than anything. I was like, ‘Wow.’”
Ekstrom called her dad with the good news. He replied that he was going to have to start playing the Lottery.
“Don’t give up,” she counseled other players.
Plans for the windfall include paying some bills and fixing up her living quarters. She also committed to playing more "Lucky 7s Playbook” Scratchers tickets.
“Lucky 7s Playbook” is a $20 game that officially began March 31. The game features a top prize of $250,000.
