A Rolla woman’s dedication to Missouri Lottery crossword games paid off in the form of a $100,000 top prize. Cindy Waterman, 42, explained that she enjoys playing crossword tickets because they take a little time to play. She plays bingo games, too, but it was her penchant for the $5 games that finally paid off.

“I always try and find the $5 crosswords (Scratchers). If nobody has them, I try to go to different stores to find them,” she explained. “I feel like you get your money’s worth. You take your time on scratching those.”

Waterman cashed in $10 worth of winners and bought two “$100,000 Crossword Doubler” tickets at Phillips 66, 1400 E. Highway 72, in Rolla. She won $5 on the first ticket, and then began to get excited as prizes mounted on the second ticket. She told her husband, Jim, later that night that she won $10,000. The two of them sat down to really examine the ticket.

“We were both looking through the words that I hadn’t marked through, and I think we both spotted it at the same time,” she recalled. “He was like, ‘Oh, my goodness. You finally hit it!’ I said, ‘I told you I was going to do it one day!’”

The windfall comes at a good time for the couple. They plan to pay off some bills and buy a car for their 16-year-old daughter. The rest will be invested for the future, including a second daughter’s car.

“It will be fun to just be stress-free and not have bills to worry about,” said Waterman.

The medical billing specialist said she would continue playing the Lottery, including Pick 4.

“Be persistent,” she counseled other players.

“Never give up,” added Jim.
$100,000 Crossword Doubler” is a $5 game that officially began Oct. 14, 2013. More than $5 million in prizes, including two top prizes, remain in the game. Players win prizes by spelling words in the game, with prize amounts determined by the number of words completed on each ticket.
