Miguel Madrigal of Sedalia sought entertainment from the Missouri Lottery while doing laundry on June 6 that resulted in a $50,000 prize. Madrigal bought a “5X Crossword” Scratchers ticket at Jiffy Stop Food Mart, 1722 W. Broadway in Sedalia, and scratched it as his clothes were drying. After uncovering the $50,000, he asked for help from longtime companion Maria Quintero.
Madrigal, 40, has been a legal resident for more than 10 years, but he speaks little English. With Maria and a niece acting as interpreters, he explained that enjoys the crossword games because they take a little while to play. He frequently buys Scratchers before his shifts at Tyson Foods in Sedalia.
He remained calm about the experience and refused to make plans for the money “until I have it in my hands.” Madrigal said he hid the winning ticket in a phone book through the weekend “because no one would look there.”
“5X Crossword” is a $3 game that officially began May 19. Madrigal claimed the first of eight top prizes in the game. More than $10 million in prizes remain.
