Cornelius Van Dyke III is business-like when it comes to playing the Missouri Lottery. The Fenton resident picks his own numbers, plays the games with the best odds and buys multi-draw tickets so that he’s covered for several drawings. His dedication paid off with a $124,000 Show Me Cash jackpot on May 28.
Van Dyke bought the winning ticket at QuikTrip, 1907 Hawkins Road, in Fenton. He used family numbers to pick the winning numbers: 6, 15, 24, 30 and 34. He knew he was a winner when he checked the nightly numbers on the MOLottery mobile app.
“It was Wednesday night, approximately 11:30 p.m. I took a look at my cell phone,” Van Dyke recalled. “Show Me Cash is the only game that I know my numbers by heart. When I saw it, I had to look at it 10 or 15 times to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.”
It took a while to convince his wife, Roxanna, but both are now excited about the possibilities.
“We’re probably going to buy a house with that,” said the 32-year-old security specialist. “It feels good, because I can pay off all our debt and both of us will be debt-free.”
Van Dyke had plenty of advice for other players, such as playing the games with better odds.
“Don’t make it out to be like a job,” he counseled. “Just play your $5 here, $5 there, because maybe one day you’ll hit, and if not, it’s just fun.”
Show Me Cash is a daily Draw Game with jackpots that start at $50,000 and grow until someone wins. Van Dyke claimed the 314th jackpot since the game began in 2008. In the last year, 58 Show Me Cash jackpots have been awarded for an average amount of more than $143,000.
