When James Gertiser made his regular stop for Missouri Lottery Draw Games tickets, a little sticker that said, “New” prompted him to also buy a Scratchers ticket. That decision resulted in a $100,000 prize.

“Every Tuesday and Friday I pick up tickets for Powerball and Mega, and I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just get a Scratchers, too,’” he recalled. “They had a little sticker on the side of the display case that said, ‘New,’ and I thought I’d just try one.”

Gertiser, 59, scratched the “$1,000,000 Platinum Payout” ticket in the parking lot of Casey’s General Store, 1306 W. Mount Vernon in Nixa, where he bought the ticket. He was surprised by what he saw.

“I scratched off the first number, it matched, and the prize was $4,000. I said, ‘Whoa.’ That’s the first time; that was even big for me,” he recounted. “I kept scratching and every one of them matched. It took me three times to figure up the total. It just blew me away.”

It took awhile to get ahold of his wife, who was also incredulous.

“I went to telling her the story, and she said, ‘No way.’ She couldn’t hardly believe it,” said Gertiser. “It’s been an adrenaline rush type thing – hard to sleep, thinking about what we’re going to do.”

He said they would “spread it around” to their children and bank the majority for a down-payment on a house.  The maintenance technician for the Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery said they didn’t need much – he didn’t want much yard to mow.

“Play in moderation,” he counseled other players. “And keep your fingers crossed.”

$1,000,000 Platinum Payout” is a $10 game that officially began May 19. The game features three top prizes of $1 million, one of which was already won at another location in Nixa.
