Paul Lindhorst of Hannibal is a regular Missouri Lottery player. He purchased a “50X The Cash” Scratchers ticket on March 31 that resulted in a $5,000 prize. He and his wife, Lynn, claimed the prize on a trip to central Missouri later that week.

“Among other things, we have to go the Veteran’s Administration Hospital tomorrow,” explained Lynn.

“It worked out fine,” added Paul, regarding their combined business and pleasure voyage.

Lindhorst, an Air Force veteran and retired accountant, said that he plays Scratchers every day during his morning coffee meeting with local friends.

“My wife gives me $5 a day, and I’ll go spend it on scratch tickets,” he began. “It used to be $10 a day. One time, all my friends at the coffee shop were complaining because I never had enough money to buy a round. So, they wrote her a letter, they all signed it, even the waitress, asking her to give me more money. So, you know what happened then? I said, ‘Don’t write any more letters or I’ll be down to $2.50!’”

Making the trip into a vacation, the couple planned to stay at the casino in Boonville.

“I think we’ll gamble as much as $1,000, and the rest I’m giving to her because we need some things done around the house,” said Paul.

He bought the winning ticket at Ayerco, 7233 Highway 36, in Palmyra. He explained that Lynn controls the spending and does better at the casino, but that he has good luck with the Lottery. He recounted the winning moment.

“I win more money with these (Scratchers). I enjoy it,” he said. “The other night, I was sitting there at the Rocket Café… and I kept scratching:  $2,000, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000. I asked you and Cheyenne (waitress), ‘Is this real?’ She screamed.”

As for advice for other players, Lynn said, “Don’t spend it all at once.”

Paul added, “You can’t win unless you play.”

All kidding aside, Paul reflected on their 48 years of marriage.

“I don’t know what I would’ve done without her,” he said. “She’s the love of my life. She’s an angel, and I’m the devil. If it wasn’t for her, I’d probably be living in a box somewhere getting rained on.”

50X The Cash” is a $10 game that officially began Dec. 30, 2013. The game features a top prize of $1 million. To date, more than $24 million in prizes, including two top prizes, remain in the game.
