A Phelps County resident has started the 2014 spring season by growing a $5 bill into a $20,000 paycheck. Maureen Skaggs of Newburg dug up a second-tier prize on a Missouri Lottery “$100,000 Crossword Doubler” Scratchers ticket on March 25.
“It was surreal,” Skaggs recalled, referring to the instant she realized she’d won one of only five $20,000 prizes available in the game.
The 53-year-old tax specialist said it’s “a busy time of the year” for her and her husband, Bob, who own an H&R Block franchise.
“It’s fun to take a break and play some Scratchers tickets,” Skaggs revealed, adding that she purchased the winning ticket at Rolla Motomart, 119 Howard Johnson Drive, in Rolla.
The couple, who will celebrate 34 years of marriage this September, plan to use the prize money to pay off an existing auto loan and purchase a “new to us” four-wheel pick-up truck.
After claiming the prize at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City, Skaggs took the time to offer well wishes to a fellow player.
“I hope you’re the next big winner,” she said to a patron purchasing a Lottery ticket at a vending machine. “It can happen. I’m proof!”
“$100,000 Crossword Doubler” is a $5 ticket that offers two game puzzles and thousands of prizes ranging from $5 to $100,000.
