If it’s true that a family that plays together, stays together, the Lloyd family, Eugene, 71, Barbara, 64, and Eugene Jr., 37, all of New Haven, have many years of happiness ahead. The trio claimed a $6,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery “Triple Cash” Scratchers ticket on March 11.
“It was breathtaking,” recalled Barbara, referring to the moment her son showed her and her husband the winning ticket.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Eugene.
Eugene Jr., Barbara and Eugene’s son, has been buying Scratchers tickets for his family for years, with the understanding that all winnings would be split equally between each person.
“I was so nervous when I scratched off that ticket, because we’ve never won before,” Eugene Jr. reminisced. “My parents kept the ticket overnight at their house, because it was a Sunday, and we had to wait until the next day to claim it. I didn’t want to lose it!”
After a day of waiting, the Lloyd family made the trek from their Franklin County homes to Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City.
“I feel light,” beamed Barbara.
When asked what each person would do with their cut of the prize, Eugene replied, “We’ll save and put it up for hard times.”
Eugene Jr. had other more immediate plans.
“My truck broke down on my way to my parents’ house to tell them the news, so I’ll use the prize money to fix it,” said Eugene Jr.
When asked to sum up the entire experience, Barbara replied, “It’s just amazing.”
The family added that they’ll continue their method of Eugene Jr. picking out the tickets for the family to play.
“I hope we’re back here again real soon with another winner,” Eugene Jr. concluded, noting he bought the winning “Triple Cash” ticket at Casey’s General Store, 9454 Highway 100 in New Haven, on March 10.
“Triple Cash” is a $1 ticket with a top prize of $6,000. The Lloyd family claimed the first of six top prizes available in the game, which began on March 10. To date, thousands of additional prizes remain in play, ranging from free tickets to $3,000.
