Leon Schmidt admittedly spends a lot of time playing the Missouri Lottery. Schmidt, 70, is retired from the University of Missouri and likes to fill his time with Scratchers tickets. He bought a “$5,000,000 Jackpot” ticket about a week following his birthday that yielded a $20,000 payday.

“I play every day,” said Schmidt. “I’m retired, and I play all around. I go to different stores, sometimes two or three in a day. I enjoy it, and it gives me something to do. I get tired of watching TV all day.”

His Lottery hobby is paying dividends. He won $10,000 a few years ago, and now, he has followed that up with a win twice as large. He’s hoping for a million-dollar prize, like the one a Columbia woman won late last year.

“You got to play to win,” he said.

Schmidt bought this winning ticket at Midwest Petroleum, 1412 Rangeline St., in Columbia. He didn’t have a strategy for picking games, and likewise, he doesn’t have any plans for the windfall.

“I’ll probably help my son a little,” he suggested. “And I’ll keep playing. I bought more tickets after I won.”

$5,000,000 Jackpot” is a $20 game that officially began Aug. 5, 2013. In addition to the top prize of $5 million, more than $48 million in prizes remain in the game, including eight second prizes of $100,000. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at MOLottery.com.
