School Bus Driver Makes $4,000 Lottery Haul

A stop for lunch led an Audrain County resident to a $4,000 Missouri Lottery prize on Feb. 21. Vicki Murphy, 55, of Mexico was on a break from her route as a public school bus driver when she decided to make a stop for a sandwich and a “50X The Cash” Scratchers ticket at Casey’s General Store, 828 W. Monroe St., in Mexico.

“It was wild,” the first-time Lottery winner said of the moment she realized she’d won. “I was sitting on my bus, passing time and eating my lunch. Then, I saw the prize and couldn’t believe it.”

After a call to her husband, Tim, of 36 years, Murphy finished her workday before returning home.

“I kept that ticket close,” she reminisced, adding that she “probably checked on it a dozen times” to ensure the ticket’s safety while snuggled inside of her wallet.

As for plans for the prize money, Murphy declared she’ll “hang on to it for now.”

“I don’t know what we’re going to use the money for yet, other than a good, big lunch on our way back to Mexico,” she teased, while claiming her prize at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City on Feb. 25.

50X The Cash” is a $10 ticket with a top prize of $1 million and more than $35 million in total cash prizes available in the game.
