A Greene County resident joked that if somebody would’ve asked him his name on Jan. 31, he might not have been able to tell them the correct answer, because of what had happened moments earlier. When 71-year-old Ralph Holman uncovered a $100,000 Missouri Lottery prize outside of Casey’s General Store, 410 Miller Road in Willard, he was “shocked.”
“I sat in my pick-up truck for probably 20 or 30 minutes before I moved,” Holman reminisced, referring to the moment he realized he’d won.
The self-proclaimed “regular Lottery player” said he bought two “$5,000,000 Jackpot” Scratchers tickets, and he fared well on both.
“I got $40 on the first one and then $100,000 on the second one,” he shared.
After the surprise subsided, Holman returned to the store to ask a question.
“I said, ‘What’s the biggest winner you’ve ever sold?’” he recalled. “The girl said that the day before yesterday, she sold one that won $100. I said, ‘Well, I won $100, too.’”
After clarifying that he won $100, plus a few extra zeros, “everybody started screaming.”
“There was a cop in there, and he patted me on the back,” he remembered. “I said, ‘You watch me when I leave. I’m going to be wearing both of my seatbelts!’”
Holman plans to use the windfall to take care of expenses.
“I’m going to pay my bills first thing, and then I’m going to pay for every bit of my burial,” he said. “I don’t want my family to have to pay for any of it.”
The former custodian at Missouri State University in Springfield said one of the best things about the win is that he can leave his retirement check in the bank.
“I don’t need to worry to so much anymore,” he concluded. “I’m real thankful for that.”
