Working in Missouri Pays Off for Lottery Winner

Thomas Thompson of Goshen, Ark., routinely makes the long drive to and from Joplin for his job. But it was a surprise $50,000 instant paycheck he ended up taking home after winning a top prize on a Missouri Lottery “Bonus Crossword” Scratchers ticket.

Thompson shared that his daughter was home sick with the flu and, together, they had scratched off a few Scratchers tickets to help pass the time. The boredom soon lifted when she made an exciting observation.

“She said, ‘Dad, we got a lot of words on this one,’” Thompson recalled, explaining that he thought he’d won $5,000 by uncovering 10 words on his puzzle.
Taking the ticket to work the next day, he thought he spotted another word and decided to show it to a co-worker.

“He told me, ‘You need to get in the car right now and go wherever you need to go to get it taken care of,’” Thompson said, remembering it with a laugh.

In addition to paying off credit card debt, Thompson thinks his daughter has definitely earned the karaoke machine she’s been eyeing and maybe even a trip to Florida.

Thompson purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 1503 S. Rangeline Road in Joplin, on Jan. 23. The $3 game officially began Oct. 14, 2013.
