An O’Fallon, Ill., woman’s favored football team might not have come out victorious on Jan. 11, but she still ended up with a big win. While Amanda Weber, 28, gathered with friends to watch the Indianapolis Colts take on the New England Patriots, she uncovered a $100,000 Missouri Lottery prize.
“We needed Red Bull for some mixed drinks we were making,” she began. “My buddy was going to the gas station, so I said, ‘Will you get me a scratch-off?’”
Weber described what happened after her friend returned from Petro Mart, 2401 Highway 109 in Wildwood, as “pretty amazing.”
“Everyone was screaming and chanting,” she recalled, referring to the moment she realized she’d won the game’s first of only three available top prizes.
“My buddy who went and picked it out for me handled it with stride,” she reflected. “I told him that I was going to give him a little bit. He didn’t expect anything, but I said I definitely would.”
The celebrating didn’t end at the party, because Weber’s family, especially her father, was thrilled about the news.
“I’ve never heard my dad scream in his entire life, but he screamed like a little girl when I told him,” she joked. “My mom, grandma and stepdad were super excited. My grandma always plays the Lottery.”
Since Weber’s grandma, Billy Woods of Shiloh, Ill., is a Lottery enthusiast, Weber felt it was fitting to bring her along to claim the prize at the Lottery’s St. Louis office on Jan. 13.
When asked how the windfall might impact her daily life, the oncology pharmacist said the windfall came at an opportune time.
“I graduated from pharmacy school recently, so I have quite a bit of student loans,” she started. “I just said on the drive to that party, ‘Man, if I could pay off some of these student loans, my life would be much nicer. And then this happened!’”
The first-time Lottery winner added that she’ll also use the windfall to treat herself to a new computer.
“I work for a pharmaceutical company, so I work a lot from home,” she said. “Maybe I’ll take a trip somewhere, too. I haven’t been out of the country in a long, long time. I’d like to travel Europe.”
Although Weber admitted that she was “a little sad to see the Colts lose,” the night turned around in her favor.
“It’s life-changing,” she declared. “It’s not millions of dollars, but I was never one to think I would need millions. This is just the right amount to help me out and get me started with my career.”
