Branson Woman Learns Lesson After Lottery Win

A Branson woman had nearly a quarter-of-a-million dollars sitting in her car for more than three months, and she didn’t even know it. Laurie Engler-Brokate is accustomed to purchasing Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash tickets and stashing them away in her vehicle. Luckily, the 58-year-old decided to check a ticket that ended up being worth $238,000 before it expired.

“I had a stack of tickets,” Engler-Brokate revealed. “I finally checked them all on Friday (Nov. 22). I couldn’t believe it!”

The first-time Lottery winner bought the winning Show Me Cash ticket for the Aug. 7 drawing at Cottage Market, 1575 Tablerock Circle, in Branson. She used Quick Pick to match all five numbers drawn – 11, 14, 22, 28 and 32.

Engler-Brokate said the win will provide “a little bit of relief” just in time for the holidays.

“It’s a blessing,” she shared. “I’m going to be very cautious and put it into savings.”

She teased that the entire experience taught her “a good lesson.”

“I’m not going to wait so long to check my tickets next time,” she joked. “I might have another big one riding along with me.”

Show Me Cash, a daily Draw Game with jackpots that start at $50,000 and grow until someone wins, started in 2008. Tickets expire 180 days after a drawing has occurred. Engler-Brokate is the game’s 268th jackpot winner. In the past 12 months, 57 jackpot prizes have been awarded, with the average jackpot size of more than $190,000.
