Long-time Missouri Lottery player Kimberly McGrew had her biggest win and most shocking start to her workday to date, when she uncovered a $50,000 top prize on a “Bonus Crossword” Scratchers ticket. The 56-year-old mail handler explained how the win came as a result of her daily routine on Nov. 18.
“I go over there every day,” McGrew began, referring to stopping at Gateway Newstand, 1820 Market St. in St. Louis, before her shifts begin at the United States Postal Service located across the street. “I’ve been playing for 15 or 16 years.”
The mother-of-two said her workday couldn’t end soon enough after learning she had uncovered one of only eight top prizes available in the $3 game.
“I was in shock,” she reflected. “It was really shocking. I went over it about 50 times, because I couldn’t believe it.”
McGrew, who won $3,000 on Pick 4 several months ago, joked that she was “excited and nervous” about her most current win.
“I went home after I got off of work, and I put it (ticket) up in a safe place,” she revealed, noting that she didn’t think anyone would find her ticket in the secret spot. “I bought a bedspread that I hadn’t opened, so I stuck it inside of there.”
The lucky Lottery winner plans to share her good fortune with her family.
“I’m going to pay off my car,” she shared. “I’m going to buy my daughter a used car, and maybe I’ll put a down payment on a car for my mom, because she needs a new car.”
With what’s left, she intends to surprise her eldest child living in Oregon with “some Christmas cash.”
McGrew, who dubbed this win “a blessing,” summed up her Lottery-winning experience with some advice for fellow gaming enthusiasts.
“You can’t win if you don’t play,” she concluded. “I’m going to keep playing!”
“Bonus Crossword” players can win between $3 and $50,000 on each ticket, which also includes a bonus word feature for a chance at $10 instantly.
