Two friends and co-workers have one more thing to be grateful for this year when they celebrate Thanksgiving with their families – a $331,000 windfall. Edward Orr Jr. of Crocker and Brian Gillespie of Rolla, both 46, claimed the Missouri Lottery’s Show Me Cash jackpot from the drawing on Nov. 16.
“We’ve been playing together since we started working at the hospital a few years ago,” Orr began, noting that both he and Gillespie are warehouse material handlers at General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital. “We take turns buying tickets when jackpots get high.”
Orr, who bought their winning ticket at Crocker Conoco, 504 Commercial Street in Crocker, said it was “the middle of the night” when he decided to check the numbers on his computer.
“I called him (Gillespie) up, and I think I scared his wife, because it was 1 or 2 a.m.,” Orr recalled, teasing that both Gillespie’s wife, Patricia, and his wife, Rebecca, were in “total disbelief” when they heard the news.
Orr, the father of one son, and Gillespie, a father of six children, both plan to use the prize money for bills.
“I’m going to be able to pay off the house entirely,” said Gillespie. “It will feel great not to have to make that payment anymore.”
Orr said in addition to paying down his home mortgage, he’ll also pay off his vehicle.
“It’s unbelievable,” Orr concluded. “We’ll definitely keep playing.”
Orr and Gillespie each received half of the $331,000 jackpot – or $165,500 before taxes.
Show Me Cash is a daily Draw Game with jackpots that start at $50,000 and grow until someone wins. Orr and Gillespie won the game’s 283rd jackpot prize. In the past 12 months, 57 jackpot prizes have been awarded, with the average jackpot size of more than $197,000.
