Before dozing off, a 23-year-old Independence woman made a discovery that brought a $100,000 dream to light. Kelly Pease had just finished her shift at Ameristar Casino when she stopped at 7-Eleven, 17801 E. Highway 24, in Independence. After an evening of distributing funds to casino patrons, the cage cashier tried her luck on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers game.

“It was about an hour later – right before I was going to sleep,” Pease recalled. “The lights were off, and I was scratching in the dark.”

After squinting to read her “$100,000 Crossword Doubler” ticket, she “started screaming and stuttering.”

“I ran upstairs and told my mom,” she remembered. “I couldn’t believe it. I kept looking it over to make sure.”

The first-time Lottery winner admitted that she “couldn’t get back to sleep” after the excitement subsided.

“It was very hard to sleep, especially knowing I was sleeping on a gold mine,” she teased.
While claiming her prize at the Independence Lottery office, she noted that she “still can’t believe it.”

“Ever since I turned 18, I’ve been playing,” she shared, adding that this is the largest prize she has won to date.

Pease’s plans for the windfall will incorporate the “triple trio,” a phrase she coined that refers to her intentions for the prize money.

“I’ll spend some, save some (and) give some,” she clarified.

After she makes her final car payment, she aims to donate to “a breast cancer awareness charity and City Mission.”

Pease summed up her experience by saying, “I feel good!”

“I’m trying to remain humble,” she reflected. “It’s a blessing. I’m just happy.”

$100,000 Crossword Doubler,”  a $5 ticket that features two game puzzles and five $100,000 top prizes, officially started on Jan. 18.
