Winfred Lee of Barry, Ill., collected a quick $5,000 when he uncovered the prize amount on a Missouri Lottery “MONOPOLY™” Scratchers game on Sept. 18. Business and pleasure have been driving the 61-year-old across state lines for more than 26 years. The maintenance planner for a chemical company in Hannibal noted that before work, he often stops for gas and a Lottery ticket at Ayerco, 1208 Mark Twain Ave., in Hannibal.
“I get a random ticket or two – whatever strikes me at the time,” Lee shared.
The windfall came at an opportune time for Lee, who will undergo surgery in St. Louis later this month.
“I thanked God for blessing me,” he reflected, regarding the moment he realized he’d won.
The proud grandfather of a two-week-old grandson said he and his wife, Deanna, have been concerned about the price of his upcoming procedure, so the prize came at a “perfect time.”
“The out-of-pocket costs are about $8,000,” he explained. “This will help relieve some of the stress.”
The Lees recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary, so the couple might also splurge on a “special dinner.”
“It will make things easier,” he beamed.
