Though they hadn’t bought a Powerball ticket in nearly a decade, the last-minute decision to try for the Aug. 7 jackpot of $425 million resulted in a stroke of exceptional luck for Eloise and Patrick McDonald. The Quick Pick ticket she purchased on a whim at Huck’s Food Store, 2875 St. Peters Howell Road in St. Peters, matched all five white-ball numbers drawn, earning the couple a $1 million Match 5 prize.
“It’s just been so exciting,” shared Eloise, recounting how she took her ticket back to the store a couple of days later to verify that it was a winner.
“I handed the ticket to the cashier, and I said, ‘I understand you sold a $1 million ticket here. Will you look to see if these numbers on line B look familiar to your computer?’”
Indeed they did, and the McDonalds turned up at the Lottery’s St. Louis regional office about a week later to claim their prize.
The McDonald’s win marks the 24th time a Missouri Lottery player has won the Match 5 prize since Powerball enhancements were introduced in 2012.
Powerball is a multi-Lottery Draw Game played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It features jackpots that start at $40 million, with drawings held every Wednesday and Saturday night.
