Lottery ticket sales in Missouri have broken all previous records once again by exceeding $1.1 billion during Fiscal Year 2013, which ended June 30. Total unaudited sales were $1,141,219,013*, which is $43.7 million or nearly 4 percent higher than the last fiscal year. It marks the fourth consecutive year of increases.
“We are so elated to reach this level of sales,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “I want to thank our players, our retailers and our employees for helping us reach this milestone.”
Along with achieving record sales, the Lottery also recently posted record proceeds of more than $288.8 million in FY13.
“There are many factors that played a part in this year’s record sales and proceeds to education,” Reardon said. “We implemented a new advertising campaign called ‘Play It Forward,’ which has been highly successful. We also had several high Powerball jackpots, more jackpot winners and our biggest jackpot winners ever – the Hills, who won a $293.7 million jackpot last November. All of these things contributed to higher sales.”
Reardon said other factors that fueled sales growth were:
Successful Scratchers tickets, including brand-name licensed properties such as MONOPOLY™, Harley-Davidson®, Slingo and the newest, Powerball/Mega Millions game
A new loyalty program called Points For Prizes®
Strong Show Me Cash sales and higher jackpots
Incentives for retailers to put new tickets on sale within two days of their arrival.
The Lottery awarded more than $1 billion** in prizes during FY13, bringing the total prizes won since the Lottery began in 1986 to more than $10 billion*. Thirty-two Missouri Lottery tickets worth $1 million or more were sold – eight more than last year – awarding jackpots ranging from $1 million to $293.7 million. More than $339.6 million in jackpot prizes were paid out overall.
The big prize payouts included:
Seven Lotto jackpot winners worth a combined $17.2 million;
Ten Scratchers millionaires worth a total of $14,792,676;
Fourteen Match 5 Powerball prizes of $1 million each;
One Powerball jackpot worth $293.7 million, the biggest Missouri jackpot ever won.
In addition to the jackpot prizes, five tickets worth $250,000 were sold in Mega Millions, and 56 Show Me Cash players won top-prize jackpots worth a combined $10.2 million and ranging from $50,000 to $898,000.
Retailers also had a record year, collecting more than $70.2 million* for selling Missouri Lottery products. Historically, retailers have earned more than $1 billion since the Lottery began in 1986.
