Jonathon Powell of Fredricktown said that he and some friends were just “messing around” when he bought a $100,000 winning Missouri Lottery ticket. The 21-year-old auto parts salesman said he just bought one “Millionaire” Scratchers ticket at Casey’s General Store, 507 Lincoln Dr. in Fredricktown, and he didn’t win anything. But something told him to splurge on one more.
“I almost walked out, but I decided to go ahead and grab it,” recalled Powell. “I scratched it off, and the prizes kept getting bigger. I couldn’t walk away. I had to have it, and I’m glad I did.”
Powell said he scratched the ticket inside the store with friends urging him on. He uncovered the first prize of $10,000, “put down my coin and walked away” in disbelief, only to return to the ticket and scratch off a similar prize.
“They told me, ‘Keep scratching! Keep scratching!’ The more I scratched, the more I won,” he said. “I added it all up, and it was $100,000. I was jumping higher than I ever have before. I never could have seen this happening to me.”
Powell said he is engaged to be married, but the only plans for now include a new vehicle.
“I plan on getting a new truck,” he said. “I’ve already been looking.”
Although he doesn’t play too often, Powell said he would continue to buy tickets.
“Keep playing,” he advised other players. “You never know; it could happen to anybody.”
“Millionaire” is a $10 game that officially began May 20. The game features a top prize of $1 million, of which, two remain. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at MOLottery.com.
