William Burnett of Cook Station occasionally buys Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets after work and takes them home for his wife to scratch. That was the case on June 7, when he bought a “Deuces Wild” Scratchers ticket that turned out to be worth $25,000. But before his wife, Trecia, could scratch the ticket, she gave him grief that he was stuck buying a losing game.
“After the second one that wasn’t a winner, she kept complaining about me buying that kind of ticket,” he explained. “I stopped in there and decided I’m going to buy her one more of them. I’m glad I did.”
Burnett bought the winning ticket at Casey’s General Store, 388 W. Main St. in Steelville, on his way home from work at Mid-Mo Truss in Cuba.
“Brought it home, first thing she said was, ‘What, again?’” recalled Burnett.
“You just can’t get away from these!” Trecia chimed in.
Her tune quickly changed as she scratched the ticket.
“The first one (prize) I scratched was $5,000. I said, ‘William, it’s $5,000!’ He said, ‘No!’” she remembered, noting that William was in disbelief.
A total of five prizes added up to a $25,000 winning ticket. Both said they didn’t believe it until they presented the ticket for claim at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City.
“I had to look at it two or three times to make sure,” said William. “I wasn’t sure if it was a winner or not.”
Now that the win has been confirmed, the couple said they would use the money to “pay off stuff.”
“Pay her car off. Maybe do a little work on my truck,” suggested William. “It will help us out a lot. It won’t get me out of debt, but it will help.”
