It was a typical Sunday for a Caruthersville couple, until one of them realized they were holding a Missouri Lottery ticket worth $50,000. Jerry and Susan Hilburn were enjoying their weekly dinner with family when Jerry decided to cut the evening short to catch a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game on television. It was while watching his favorite team that the 64-year-old remembered he had a “$50,000 Crossword Extra” ticket he hadn’t scratched. Moments later, Hilburn was on his way back to the Sunday dinner spot to share some exciting news with his relatives.
“I had to count it three or four times,” Hilburn joked. “I came up with $5,000. Then, I counted it three or four more times, and I came up with $50,000!”
The Hilburns, who will celebrate 42 years of marriage this October, said the windfall is “going to help us out a lot.”
“We’ve got a lot of things to do with $50,000,” Hilburn added, noting the prize money will go towards paying bills, home improvements and retirement. “It will be well used!”
Hilburn purchased the winning ticket at The Store, 1906 Truman Blvd. in Caruthersville, on April 28.
“$50,000 Crossword Extra” is a $3 game with a top prize of $50,000. To date, seven out of eight top prizes and thousands of other prizes, ranging from $3 to $5,000, remain in play. Hilburn claimed the first top prize awarded in the game.
