Lottery Proceeds Top $4.5 Billion with March Transfer to Education

Story Photo

Missouri Lottery proceeds to the state and public education surpassed the $4.5 billion mark with today’s transfer of $22 million to the Lottery Proceeds Fund. The monthly transfer of $22,044,395 is based on February sales and brings the total transferred in FY13 to more than $207 million.

Lottery sales began in January 1986, and initially, proceeds went to the General Revenue Fund. Approximately half a billion dollars went to General Revenue until voters decided in 1992 to send all proceeds to public education.  Since that law took effect in July 1993, more than $4 billion has been generated for elementary, secondary and higher education.

Programs funded in FY13 include the A+ Scholarship Program, the Foundation Program and Access Missouri. For complete information about Missouri Lottery proceeds, including maps of proceeds by program and by county, see the “Where the $ Goes” section.
