Michael Foxworthy of California was having a quiet morning yesterday, right up until he uncovered a $100,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery “$4,000,000 Cash Spectacular” Scratchers ticket. The 39-year-old store manager at Mertens Mini-Mart, 401 E. Buchanan St. in California, often plays Scratchers tickets during his breaks. Although, he’s won up to $1,000 before, he’d “never won a really big one,” which made his recent win all the more surreal.
“I played seven in a row and hit $100, and then I hit $100,000,” Foxworthy shared, adding that his day took an exciting turn after he uncovered the prize. “It was a crazy time, because I had some customers in the store whenever I hit it. In California, news travels real quickly. A lot of people know.”
After returning from break and assisting his patrons, Foxworthy called his wife, Tonya, to share the news. Tonya admitted that she didn’t believe her husband at first, so she requested that he “send a picture” of the winning ticket.
Upon visual confirmation and the completion of Foxworthy’s shift, he picked up his wife, and the pair drove to Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City to claim the prize.
As for how they’ll use the windfall, Foxworthy said he’s looking forward to paying off their vehicles and paying down their home mortgage.
The parents-of-four also mentioned the winnings will especially come in handy when their children head to college, noting that one of their kids will be enrolling this fall. As for whatever is left, the Foxworthys, who will celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary in July, “might splurge on a trip.”
“$4,000,000Cash Spectacular” is a $20 game with a top prize of $4 million.
