As a lineman, Michael Gamet became accustomed to restoring power for Missourians during his 40 years in the business. Call it fate, good fortune or plain luck, but the 71-year-old Mexico man recently uncovered an $88,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket coincidentally named “Power 8s.”
Gamet believes acquiring the winning ticket was an act of serendipity. He had just attended a gun club meeting in Millersburg with his son, who lives in Fulton. After dropping him off, he headed to his home in Mexico. Somewhere around Kingdom City, he admitted to experiencing a strong feeling that he needed to stop for a Scratchers ticket. Gamet succumbed to the temptation and pulled into Westland Travel Center, 3296 Gold Ave., in Kingdom City.
“I felt like somebody was pushing my steering wheel and wanting me to turn in and buy a Lottery ticket,” Gamet revealed.
Minutes later, Gamet sat in his car with a top-prize winning “Power 8s” ticket in his hand.
“I said, ‘Wow, I hit the big one!’” he recalled, joking that he thought he might “pass out” after reading the prize amount.
“I’m thinking, ‘Oh, boy! Things just got a lot better, because I can pay off a lot of bills now,’” he added.
When asked how the windfall would impact his life, the avid fisherman declared it “won’t change much,” with the exception of feeling some much appreciated financial freedom.
“I mow yards in the summer just to keep busy,” the retiree noted. “I’ll keep mowing yards and going fishing. I might get a few new rods and reels, though.”
“Power 8s,” a $5 game with a top prize of $88,000, officially started on June 20, 2012.
