When Joseph Collora’s wife asked him to go grocery shopping, the Fenton man teased that he was less than thrilled. However, he changed his tune after discovering the Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash ticket he bought to pass time while shopping at Dierbergs, 450 Old Smizer Mill Road in Fenton, was worth a whopping $253,000.

“My heart fell down to my feet,” Collora joked, referring to the moment the 65-year-old returned from work and checked his winning ticket. “I had to keep looking at the numbers over and over again.”

The chemical processor had just worked a long shift at Solutia Eastman Chemical Company, and he thought his eyes were deceiving him when he saw his Quick Pick numbers – 1, 9, 21, 22 and 33 – matched all five numbers drawn on Jan. 27.

After confirming the winning numbers on the Lottery’s website, Collora admitted that he started “running around the house screaming.”
“I called my wife, and she couldn’t believe it, either,” he shared. “I still can’t believe it, but it’s true!”

While some Lottery winners declare that they’re going to Disney World® after winning, the lucky Lottery winner said that he and his wife, Sherri, are “going to Atlantis,” a resort in the Bahamas, to celebrate their good fortune. The couple, who’ve been married for 20 years, will also use their prize money to purchase a new vehicle, pay bills, including their home mortgage, and according to Collora, “Just get things that we’ve been wanting to get!”

Even sweeter yet, Collora had planned on retiring in November anyway, but he added that the windfall might help him realize his dream sooner.

As for advice for fellow Lottery players, he shared these encouraging words, “You just have to keep trying!”

Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000, which increases by at least $5,000 at each drawing.
