Roxann Smith of Sedalia celebrated her 58th birthday by driving to Jefferson City to claim a $25,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery “Bingo Mania” Scratchers game. She bought the ticket the previous weekend at Casey’s General Store, 716 W. 16th St., in Sedalia.
“I’m like the crazy Lottery lady,” Smith joked of her routine. “Every Friday and Saturday morning, I go get coffee, Bingo and Crossword tickets and a newspaper.”
This time, something told her she was going to win.
“I said, ‘I’m going to get that X,’” she shared, of the shape formed when a player’s card numbers match eight numbers to go along with the game’s free “Bingo” spot.
“Yeah, just visualize and make it happen,” teased her daughter, Pepper.
Smith took the tickets back to her home to scratch, keeping with her system of scratching “Bingo” last.
“It was just me, my jammies and my dog,” she said with a laugh.
Upon realizing she’d won, she added, “I don’t remember much after that. I bawled, and it was just the craziest thing.”
She was still in tears as her daughter arrived.
“I thought someone had died,” offered Pepper. “And all she could get out was, ‘It’s good, it’s good.’”
“I will never forget this birthday. I’m so excited, you’d think I’d won millions,” Smith exclaimed. “But I’m a happy ‘thousandaire.’”
Three top prizes of $55,558 remain unclaimed in the “Bingo Mania” game. The game officially started July 21, offering more than $10 million in total prizes. All remaining prizes can be tracked at Molottery.com
