A Moberly couple started of 2013 with a plan to save money every week until they had enough for a vacation. Plans changed when an unexpected Missouri Lottery win took Connie and Ray Sills’ savings jar contents from zero to $22,500, providing more than enough for a trip to visit family in Georgia later this year.
The Sills are both Pick 4 enthusiasts. Connie explained that she’s been diligently playing one specific set of numbers for the last several months at Moberly Mart, 1400 N. Morley St., in Moberly.
“I usually play birthdays, addresses and stuff like that,” Connie began. “But this number just kind of caught my eye – 1-1-9-9 – and I just stuck with it.”
Thanks to Connie’s dedicated play, she and Ray were able to claim a $22,500 prize from the Pick 4 evening drawing on Jan. 5.
“Believe it or not, I was playing the same number,” Ray teased, referring to the 1-1-9-9 number combination. “Then all of a sudden, I got mad, and I quit playing that number.”
The couple, who’ve been married for 26 years, joked that a win for one of them is a win for both.
As for plans for the prize money, in addition to bidding adieu to the savings jar, the parents-of-two and grandparents-of-three will “catch up on repairs around the house and surprise our grandchildren.”
“It’s just a blessing,” Connie beamed. “It really is.”
Pick 4 is a Draw Game that costs 50 cents or $1 per play. Daily drawings are held at 12:45 p.m. and 8:59 p.m. On average, there are approximately 162 winners per draw.
