A Christmas Story: Kirksville Man Claims Game's First Top Prize

A Christmas night run to buy batteries for his daughters’ Christmas presents gifted a Kirksville man with a $27,777 win on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers game. Steven Tallman, 30, made the discovery while scratching a “Golden 7s” ticket outside Ayerco, 2214 N. Baltimore, in Kirksville. It was the first top prize claimed in the game, which began Dec. 3.

Tallman noted it was a last-minute choice to include Scratchers tickets with his battery purchase.

“I reached over and hit the lock button on the car door,” he said, explaining his surprise and excitement upon realizing he held a winning ticket.

“I called Deanna (his wife), and she was waiting outside when I got home,” he offered with a laugh, adding that his young daughters asked if this meant they could get new bikes. “I said, ‘Of course you can!’”

“It was like, ‘What have we done to deserve this?’” Deanna added. “But we were just in the right place at the right time and got lucky.”

The Tallmans plans to use the winnings for a van for Steven’s floor covering business. They also decided that, instead of trying to figure out which family or friends to give a little to, they would commit “a random act of kindness to a family that could maybe use it” in line at the grocery store.

In addition to top prizes of $27,777, the $2 “Golden 7s” game also offers thousands of other prizes ranging from $2 to $1,000, all of which can be tracked at MOLottery.com.
