A night of distractions landed a Sedalia woman prizes totaling $8,348 in the Missouri Lottery Club Keno game. Tina Hern, 46, said the first distraction was convincing her husband, David, to skip the casino for a night of Club Keno at the American Legion, 2016 W. Main St., in Sedalia.
“I said ‘We’re going to Sedalia. I’m not driving up there again,’” she explained. “We go to the American Legion sometimes in Sedalia. It’s a quiet little place. He was busy talking, and I just went in. I wanted to play.”
The first twist of fate happened upon arrival. A friend was leaving and suggested Hern play a 6-Spot.
“We always play only 4-Spots,” she offered. “A friend of ours, Charlie, he was leaving and said, ‘Play 6-Spots. It’s going to hit.’ I was like, ‘All right. I’ll try it.’”
Hern used David’s two favorite numbers, added her own and marked the Bulls-Eye. She then laid her playslip on the counter, where another distraction and twist of fate worked in her favor. The bartender, busy with an event, scanned her playslip, but forgot to collect the money. When Hern pointed out her oversight, the bartender picked up the playslip and ran it again, charging her for both tickets. Hern thought she had been shorted, but was distracted herself by the numbers being displayed on the screen.
“I look back up again, and I’m watching my numbers. I’m like, ‘Oh, no!’ They just kept hitting.
Hern said she screamed, “I just hit all six numbers and the Bulls-Eye!” Then she realized that she had two tickets for that drawing, meaning she won double the prize - $4,174.
She told the bartender, “I’m coming back here and giving you $100 for your mistake!”
Plans for the money include upgrading her motor home for traveling to events as a vendor. Hern is a food vendor at events like the Missouri State Fair. She’ll also use some of the money to support her business in Sedalia, Dollars and Cents, a flea market and used furniture store that employs her son.
“I think of it as helping people,” she said. “If you can buy something cheaply and pass it on to someone who needs it at a good price, it’s a good thing.”
The experience was an exciting one for Hern, who said she “never wins,” except once.
“I’m happy, because it’s a neat feeling to win something like $8,000. Now I can get a little glimpse of what it’s like to win $1 million,” she offered. “If you don’t play, you can’t win.”
Hern said she’ll keep trying.
“I probably won’t ever go back to 4-Spots now. I’ll be stuck on the 6-Spot. Got to spend money to make money,” she suggested.
Hern’s winning numbers were: 5, 7, 23, 27, 63 and 69.
Club Keno is a Draw Game with drawings every four minutes. Originally only available in social environments, players can now buy Keno To Go tickets at any Missouri Lottery retail location.
