“It was a pretty short day at work!” teased Floyd Cox Jr. of Perryville, as he arrived at the Lottery’s St. Louis office to claim his part of a record-breaking Show Me Cash jackpot prize. Cox held one of two tickets that matched all five numbers drawn during the Oct. 4 drawing, scoring the 28-year-old street department worker half of the record $898,000 jackpot.
“I bought two tickets – one Thursday morning and one Thursday evening,” Cox said of his life-changing purchase at Perryville Conoco, 312 S. Kingshighway St., in Perryville. It wasn’t until the next day that he realized the significance of one of those purchases.
“A couple of guys at work were talking about a winner at Conoco, and one of them asked me if I bought any tickets and started reading numbers off,” he explained.
After confirming the numbers online, a stunned Cox took the rest of the day off work to go claim his prize.
“I’m still in shock,” he said. “I’m still trying to figure out what to do with it.”
Amongst all the handshakes and congratulatory wishes, Cox was asked if he planned to continue playing the Lottery.
“Well, yeah!” he said, as he laughed. “You never know when you might hit it!”
Cox’s claim was the 217th jackpot-winning ticket since Show Me Cash began in 2008. He shares the $898,000 jackpot with Judith Brown and Doris Meyer – a pair of Ste. Genevieve sisters who claimed the other winning ticket from the historic drawing. The winning numbers for Oct. 4 were: 5, 8, 23, 32 and 38.
Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot that starts at $50,000 and continues to grow by at least $5,000 at each drawing until someone wins it.
