John Terhune of Jefferson City remarked that it was odd that he waited around while the convenience store he visited on Sept. 11 dealt with technical difficulties. The 22-year-old bartender stopped at Bee Line Snack Shop, 2205 Southridge Dr. in Jefferson City, just as the register went down.

“It was worth it to be patient, apparently,” said Terhune.

When it was turn to check out, the loyal $2 Scratchers player said the Missouri Lottery “Scary Cash” Scratchers ticket “just popped out at me.”

“I didn’t even have planned really that I was going to buy it,” he recalled. “But I was there getting the smokes and it kind of stuck out at me, so I was like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to buy it. Whatever.’”

The impulse proved profitable. Terhune uncovered a $20,000 prize while riding in a car with friends.

“They had to pull over, and I started screaming and stuff,” he recounted. “I was shaking for about an hour.”

He added that his dedication to the $2 tickets “finally paid off.”

“Just follow your instinct,” he suggested to other players.

Terhune said most of the prize money would go toward fixing up his new duplex.

“I’ll use $2,000 for fun time and the rest is business,” he declared.

Scary Cash” is a $2 game that officially began Sept. 10. Terhune claimed the first of five top prizes in the game. More than $4 million in prizes remain. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game at MOLottery.com.
