Rene Julian says her husband is really the Scratchers player in the family, but that didn’t stop the Independence woman from bringing home a $100,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery “Smokin’ Hot Cash” Scratchers ticket.

“He was just so mad at me for winning on a $5 ticket,” she teased, citing her husband’s fondness of the $10 and $20 games.

She purchased the winning ticket at Price Chopper, 16611 E. 23rd St. in Independence, on Sept. 9.

“We had just gotten done checking out. My husband (Matthew) had a $10 bill and didn’t know if he wanted a $10 ticket or two $5 tickets,” she explained. “I told him to get what he wanted. I had $10, too, so I did the two $5s.”

It was at her home later that Julian, 33, began to scratch her tickets. She became anxious on the second ticket when she saw that one of her numbers matched one of the game’s “lucky numbers,” along with a prize listed at $20,000. She then called to her husband to uncover the rest of the game’s prizes.

“He kept saying, ‘There’s another one… and another one…,’” she said as she laughed. “I said, ‘Sit down, so I can count them!’”

When it was all said and done, Julian’s ticket held prizes that totaled $100,000.

“We’re going to pay off a little bit of debt and put the rest in the bank,” she shared. “We’re savers.”

Smokin’ Hot Cash” officially started Aug. 11. The $5 Scratchers game offers more than 750 prizes ranging from $1,000 to $100,000. In total, more than $15 million in prize money remains unclaimed in the game.
