Festus Couple Wins $88,000 Lottery Prize
Dennis and Tina Boxdorfer ride to work together every day. The two machine operators work at nearby plants in their hometown of Festus. They also play the Missouri Lottery together, and it was a ticket they purchased on the weekend that delivered a top prize of $88,000. Dennis said he picked out the “Power 8s” Scratchers ticket on Aug. 5 at Stockham’s Gas Mart, 11845 County Road CC, in Festus.
“This was a new one, so I decided to try it,” said Dennis about the winning ticket. “I just had a hunch, and I had the right hunch. We play mainly the bingo and the $3 crosswords.”
Dennis explained that they usually buy two of each ticket that they play and then scratch them off later at home.
“It was about 8 p.m. It was getting late. We were supposed to go to work today, but we came here,” recalled Dennis. “I was kind of freaking out, because I got the word ‘Power’ and I knew I won all of them, and the first one I scratched was $10,000. Me and the wife were both sitting there, like, this can’t be right! I started scratching down, and it kept just getting better.”
Eventually, the Boxdorfers could tell they had located a top prize of $88,000.
“Me and the wife were both so excited, we were both shaking,” admitted Dennis. “We didn’t go to bed until about 2:30 a.m.”
Dennis and Tina, both 54, plan to keep it simple with the windfall. They will pay off their new car and enhance their vacation plans.
“My wife likes to camp, so I’ve been told that’s what we’re doing,” he said with a smile.
According to Dennis, the $88,000 prize wasn’t enough to retire on, so he will continue to play the Lottery.
“I’ve been playing it (Lottery) since it started, and it finally happened, so it can happen,” he said. “I haven’t won Powerball, yet, so...”
” is a $5 game that officially began June 30. More than $14 million in prizes, including seven top prizes, remain in the game.
