Kirksville Area Friends Split $30,000 Lottery Prize
Brian Hilderman of Livonia and Nerenda Langley of La Plata are “Scratchers buddies.” When they found themselves together at Sunshine Country Store, 206 Front St. in Novinger, the two went in on a Missouri Lottery “$30 Grand” Scratchers ticket because “it had been a while” since Langley had played. She uncovered the $30,000 top prize.
Hilderman, 27, explained that Langley is friends with his wife, Amanda.
“She was spending the night with her, and I went down there to pick them up,” he began. We were at the gas station, bought a couple, and we decided to go in and get one more. We each threw in $1, went in and…”
“Won big!” finished Langley. “I just happened to pick the right one!”
Langley and Hilderman are splitting the prize. Each will collect $15,000 before taxes. Both expressed joy at the chance to help their families. Langley’s husband, Stephen, and son, Justin, joined them to claim the winning ticket at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City on March 26.
“I don’t feel like it’s luck,” said Langley, 27. “I feel like God has blessed us. This was meant because everybody is having tough times right now. It can go to good use for helping family out. We just happen to be the people who won.”
Hilderman said in addition to being able to “help out people,” he might “get new tires for the truck.” Stephen Langley joked that Justin wanted a down-payment for a four-wheeler and a swing-set.
All of them said they would continue to play the Lottery and offered advice.
“Don’t spend your paycheck on it, just…” began Hilderman
“Little bits at a time,” added Langley.
“But you can’t win if you don’t play,” Stephen concluded.
” is a $2 game that officially began Dec. 6, 2011. One top prize of $30,000 remains in the game. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at Molottery.com.
