Missouri Western Student Uncovers $50,000 Prize
A 20-year-old student from Lee’s Summit bought a Missouri Lottery “Bonus Crossword” Scratchers ticket in St. Joseph that resulted in a $50,000 prize. Jeremy Reid said he bought the ticket while stopping for gas at Speedy Convenience, 4007 Frederick Ave., in St. Joseph.
“Every time I get gas, I always get a couple of tickets,” began Reid. “I usually just get the $1 ones, but the guy behind the counter told me I should try the crosswords, because it’s more than you just scratch it off. You have to sit down and actually play it.”
Players uncover letters on the crossword ticket to spell words. The prizes increase with the number of words spelled. When Reid first played the ticket, he thought he had won a $5,000 prize. He was telling his mother about the win when he realized that he had missed a word. His prize was, in fact, $50,000. Some celebration followed.
Reid, who bought the ticket last Friday, returned to Lee’s Summit and claimed his winning ticket at the Kansas City Lottery office on Jan. 9. By then, he had formulated a plan to spend the money. He will pay off some student loans, buy a 50-inch television for his apartment and save some money for a trip to Las Vegas.
“It was probably the best weekend of my life so far,” Reid said of the experience.
” is a $3 game that officially began July 2, 2011. Reid claimed the last top prize in the game. Newer versions, including a $5 crossword game, are now for sale. Track prizes remaining for this and any Scratchers game here at Molottery.com.
