LOTTERY PRIZES TO PLAYERS EXCEED $3 BILLION MARK
Missouri Lottery prizes paid to players topped the $3 billion mark during December. Those prizes, which range from 25 cents to $69 million, have been paid out since the Lottery began in January 1986.
"Approximately 56 cents of every dollar spent on the Lottery goes back to players as prizes," said Jim Scroggins, executive director of the Missouri Lottery.
More than $1.6 billion of those prizes have been paid out through Scratchers games, which individually can have payouts as high as 68 percent of sales.
More than half a billion dollars in prizes, including multi-million jackpots, have been awarded to Missouri Lottery players through the multi-state game now known as Powerball. Thirty tickets from multi-state games (Powerball, Megabucks and Lotto America) have been worth $1 million or more, and 569 tickets sold in Missouri have been worth $100,000.
Another 141 Lottery tickets were worth $1 million or more.
"The Lottery continues to be a fun and entertaining way to raise money for public education programs," Scroggins said. "More than $1.7 billion has been transferred to the state, including public education."
Total sales during the Lottery’s 16 years of operations are more than $5.5 billion.
