Countdown to Bigger, Better, More Powerball Is On!

Starting Sunday, Powerball will offer bigger jackpots, better chances and more Missouri millionaires. The changes include a new $2 price point, a $40 million starting jackpot, a second-level prize of $1 million and several other enhancements to make the game even more exciting and exclusive.

"After these changes, Powerball jackpots will start higher, grow faster and be more winnable,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery.  “Not only will there be better jackpots and more buzz, but there will also be more winners – including approximately 24 more winners who will become millionaires due to the second-level prize increase.”

When the new game goes on sale on Jan. 15, the second-level prize, which is now $200,000, will go to $1 million. In Missouri, an average of 24 second-level prizes are won each year.

“One thing we hear when jackpots get high is that players would like to see more $1 million winners,” said Reardon. “Now, those players will be happy, too, knowing they have a chance at the jackpot and a chance to win $1 million, in addition to seven other great prizes.”

Reardon said jackpots will start at $40 million and the minimum roll will be at least $10 million, double the current minimum roll of $5 million. The range of Powerball numbers from which to pick is being reduced from 39 to 35, making the chances of winning the jackpot and other prizes better.

“We think the changes are very positive, and we are looking forward to the new game,” Reardon said.
