In a way, Michele Svoboda and her fiancé, Scott Pelton, have the St. Louis Blues® and the clerk at a local Circle K to thank for a $500,000 win – with taxes paid – on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. The couple won the first of four $500,000 taxes-paid prizes on the Lottery’s “$3,000,000 Taxes Paid” game.
Svoboda, 46, had gone into Circle K, 6105 Mexico Road in St. Peters, to redeem a winning “St. Louis Blues®” Scratchers ticket when she decided to try her luck on another game.
“The clerk had told me they had a couple of people who won $1,000 on it,” she shared, when asked what drew her to the “$3,000,000 Taxes Paid” game.
She scratched the ticket in her car on the way to work, unaware of what was about to unfold.
“I thought it was a $500 prize at first, and I was excited with that,” she said. “I kept scratching, and I guess the last exciting thing was that it’s taxes paid!”
Svoboda drove on to work and “everyone at the office was freaking out” as she tried to reach her fiancé by phone to share the good news. Together for seven years, she said it took Pelton “looking at the ticket to actually believe it.”
“He did drive as fast as he could to come pick me up, though,” she added with a laugh.
Among the ideas considered for dipping into their prize money, Svoboda noted a trip, buying a house or a condo and helping the four kids the couple has between them.
”$3,000,000 Taxes Paid" is a $20 game that officially began Aug. 13. The game offers a top prize of $3 million and a second prize of $500,000 – taxes paid. Remaining prizes for all Missouri Lottery Scratchers games can be tracked at Molottery.com.
