Bonne Terre Man Collects $50,000 Lottery Prize
Dale Helm is used to making his living a few dollars at a time. The Bonne Terre man hauls junk and sells the scrap metal for income. He had a few extra dollars on Nov. 9 and spent them on a Missouri Lottery “Bonus Crossword” Scratchers ticket that changed his life. He won the top prize of $50,000.
“I had a couple of extra bucks, so I got a couple of tickets,” began Helm. “It was around six o’clock, or so. Me and my little dog were sitting there watching TV; I watch a lot of those game shows. I was sitting there, chilling out, scratching it, and ‘Bam!’”
“I couldn’t believe it,” he continued. “I was freaking out, because I always freak out. (Winning) a hundred bucks was the coolest thing for me. I just couldn’t believe it. It’s just one of those things, I guess. Make my life a little easier.”
Helm, 47, said scratching Lottery tickets began as something he does with his girlfriend on weekends, but he was home alone when the big winner arrived.
“Basically, it is a weekend thing. We do them when she comes over. It gives us something to do and hang out together,” he explained.
He purchased the winning ticket on Nov. 9 at R B’s Western Package Liquor, 24 W. School St., in Bonne Terre.
Helms said he intended to use the windfall to replace his home with a new modular home.
“Pay off a little bit of this and that, and go on from there,” he said.
“It’s a blessing,” he added. “I guess everybody says that, but it was for me. It wasn’t millions, but it was the same to me as $1 million. At my age, it will kind of get me over the hump.”
” is a $3 game that officially began July 2. The game features a top prize of $50,000, of which three remain. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at Molottery.com.
