Friends Split $50,000 Prize, Then Run Out of Gas

When Willis Freeman of Jackson and his friend, Lanitta Berkbigler of Friedheim, realized they had won a top prize of $50,000 on a Missouri Lottery “Bedazzled” Scratchers game, the duo was so excited they forgot their intended stop for fuel and ran out of gas on the way home.

“We had to call a friend to come bring us some gas,” Freeman said, noting that they kept their good fortune a secret until after they claimed their prize at the Lottery’s regional office in St. Louis the next day.

“I didn’t believe it. I had to check, check and double-check… and five times check,” he laughed.

As far as uses for their Scratchers prize money, Freeman said it would likely go toward bills.

“Plus, Christmas is coming up, so this will be nice,” he added.

Freeman and Berkbigler purchased their winning “Bedazzled” ticket at BJ’s Kwik Shop, 905 S. Main St., in Sikeston.

Bedazzled,” which officially began on Aug. 13, has thousands of prizes – ranging from $3 to $5,000 – still unclaimed.  To track information on remaining prizes for any current Scratchers game, visit the Missouri Lottery’s Scratchers page.
