Steelville Woman Claims $200,000 Powerball Prize
When Jan Sutton of Steelville realized she won $200,000 playing Powerball, she was so excited that she forgot to eat.
“The night before, I had gotten on the Internet and written the numbers down on the tickets,” explained Sutton. “But I didn’t check them until the next day, while we were cooking dinner. And then we just didn’t eat dinner. This is totally exciting!”
Sutton, 45, had purchased the $5 Quick Pick ticket on a trip to the store for a previous meal. She bought the winning ticket at Country Mart, 43 E. Highway 8, in Steelville.
“I think we needed tomatoes for the salad,” she recalled.
Sutton matched all five white-ball numbers in the Oct. 1 Powerball drawing. The winning numbers were: 1, 12, 23, 27 and 43. If she had matched the Powerball number of 31, she would have won the $47 million jackpot, and she could have won $1 million by adding Power Play. But Sutton wasn’t upset about a near miss.
“This is a total blessing,” she said, adding that she posted, “Thank you, Jesus,” on her Facebook page.
Formerly of St. Louis, Sutton said she was going to officially move to Steelville.
“I love it,” she said about the community. “The floating, the hospitality … the people are wonderful.”
In addition to moving, she said the money might fund a vacation.
“Oh, I’m sure we’ll go on a vacation or something,” she suggested. “Go to Cancun and catch some rays over the winter.”
Being a regular player paid off, and Sutton offered some advice for other players.
“We play all the time. I’ve been playing since I was 18, so don’t stop,” she said. “It could happen to you!”
