Kansas City Man Wins $10,000 Powerball Prize

Story Photo audio icon John Lipp of Kansas City, Kan., comes to Missouri to get gas and Lottery tickets. He purchased a Quick Pick ticket for the Sept. 28 Powerball drawing that brought him a $10,000 prize.

“I shop over here in Missouri,” said Lipp. “I’ve got a friend who owns a gas station down in the bottoms. I go down there quite frequently to get my gas, and that’s where I buy all my tickets.”

Lipp returned to Snappy Stop, 1620 W. 14th Street in Kansas City, the next day to check his tickets.

“I put my ticket in and it read,” he began. “I said, ‘Man, this ain’t right.’ I went out to my car and started to tear my ticket up.”

Luckily, he went back in and asked the clerk to confirm his good fortune. After the clerk agreed with the Check-A-Ticket machine, it started to sink in.

“I thought he was still kidding me. There’s a first time for everything. That’s why I thought it was a big joke. I’ve never won anything,” Lipp recalled.

When some advertising at the store indicated a winning ticket had been sold there, he started to believe. But Lipp said he made another trip to scan the winning ticket one more time.

The money will be used to pay bills and help his family. Lipp said he wasn’t a “big-time player,” but he’s hoping for another win.

“I’m going down to get my Mega Millions (tickets) here in a few minutes,” he said. “I’d sure like to be talking to you Monday morning.”

Powerball is a multi-lottery Draw Game with jackpots that start at $20 million. For an extra dollar at the time of purchase, players can add the Power Play option and multiply any non-jackpot prizes by a Power Play number selected during the drawing.

The winning numbers for the Sept. 28 Powerball drawing were:  30, 41, 50, 51 and 53. The Powerball number was 8.
